Mono: Is it really worth it?
Friday, 12 June 2009
One evening, I was browsing on the Ubuntu Forums, when I came across a thread entitled “If mono is wrong should I use another distro?” (If you are wondering why I haven’t provided a link, the thread was jailed)
Mono rants p*ss me off quite a lot, and this particular thread led to me posting a complaint in the Resolution Center. The text is as follows:
Hello.
I just want to take my time to say that I am getting sick of those Mono threads. They all seem to think that because Novell have an agreement with Microsoft, Mono isn’t FOSS/should not be part of Linux, etc etc etc.
I don’t see anything wrong with having an implementation of the .NET Framework in Linux. I really don’t see any point on making those stupid rants, in fact, I don’t think these Mono rants should be allowed on UbuntuForums.
I know that Windows can be tacky for most people, but negative threads about Mono?! I don’t think so! The .NET Framework has worked for many people, so I can’t see why they don’t want it in Linux. Linux can’t be entirely free and open source software, there has to be some proprietary software in it as well. Take Xandros for example:
Although based on Debian GNU/Linux, Xandros has lots of proprietary software in it as well, in fact, I would be willing to PAY for a Linux Distro if I had the money.

The Toxic Mite
I seriously don’t understand what is wrong with Mono. As I described in my post to the Reslution Center on UF, Microsoft .NET has worked well for nearly everyone that’s used a computer. I want to know why those people are suddenly turning against proprietary software; it seems as though there’s going to be a wave of “FOSS fascists” sooner or later. I would be willing to pay for the software I need.
These b******s need to learn that Linux can’t be pure free and open source software – Take Xandros for example. Xandros has quite a few proprietary apps, so no wonder they need a little bit of money to keep it going.
